North Gwinnett Over Colquitt 14-3, Colquitt To Host Lee County September 13th

North Gwinnett secured a 14-3 victory over Colquitt County on Friday, scoring all their points in the first half. The Bulldogs’ initial drive covered 93 yards, ending with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Hall to Nick Bookman. A second touchdown came after Colquitt threw an interception deep in their own territory, allowing Kalil Mazone to score from 1 yard out.

Colquitt County’s only points came from a 25-yard field goal by Brett Fitzgerald after a false start stalled a promising drive. The Packers had another chance in the fourth quarter, but a fumble near the goal line ended their hopes.

Despite not scoring in the second half, North Gwinnett’s defense held strong, forcing crucial turnovers to preserve the win. The loss marked Colquitt County’s first regular-season home defeat since 2021.

North Gwinnett improved to 2-0, while Colquitt County fell to 2-1. Colquitt will have a week off before facing Lee County, while North Gwinnett is set to play Mill Creek next week.

Colquitt Defeats Monroe 52-14 North Gwinnett Scheduled Next

Despite a strong finish, where Colquitt scored the last 31 points of the game, including touchdowns from both the defense and special teams, the Packers struggled with turnovers and penalties. They turned the ball over four times and were penalized 19 times for 155 yards, which could be a concern as they prepare to face a more formidable opponent, North Gwinnett, next Friday. North Gwinnett, currently 1-0 and ranked No. 7 in Class 6A, will provide a stiffer challenge.

“It was a great win,” said Packers coach Sean Calhoun. “We have to eliminate mistakes. We need to clean things up.”

Colquitt County’s football team started their season on a high note with an electrifying 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jah’Boris Fuller, setting the stage for a dominant 45-28 victory over West High of Salt Lake City. The Packers, dealing with a young and largely untested roster after losing 17 starters from the previous year, excelled in all aspects of the game, including a strong offensive performance led by freshman quarterback Cohen Lawson. Lawson completed 8-of-10 passes, including his first career touchdown, and contributed to the team’s 321-yard offensive effort.

The Packers’ defense and special teams also played pivotal roles in securing the win. Fuller not only dazzled with his opening touchdown but also blocked a critical extra-point attempt, while Brett Fitzgerald was flawless in his kicking duties, converting all six extra points and adding a 48-yard field goal. The defense held West to just two touchdowns in the first three quarters, effectively neutralizing their powerful offensive line and standout quarterback Kamden Lopati, despite some late-game scores by West under a running clock.

Colquitt County’s coach, Sean Calhoun, praised his team’s performance, noting their ability to capitalize on early momentum and maintain pressure throughout the game. Despite some penalties, the Packers demonstrated resilience and skill, showcasing their potential for the season ahead. They now prepare to face Monroe High of Albany, with confidence boosted by their solid opening victory.
