Colquitt County Varsity Football Highlights: Scroggins’ Kick Seals 27-24 Win Over Benedictine

August 15, 2025 – Moultrie, GA

The 2025 season opener was one to remember. In his first ever football game, senior tennis standout Josh Scroggins drilled a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give Colquitt County a dramatic 27-24 victory over Benedictine at Tom White Field in Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Quarterback Cohen Lawson led the offense with two short touchdown runs and a 56-yard strike to newcomer Antwan Lockett. Sophomore Jason Stephenson stepped up in the backfield after an early injury to Jae Lamar, grinding out tough yards to set up the winning kick. Colquitt’s defense also came through late, forcing a punt that gave the Packers one last chance.

The Cadets, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A and loaded with Division I talent, pushed Colquitt to the wire, but the Packers never backed down. Scroggins’ confident kick sent the home crowd into celebration and gave Coach Sean Calhoun’s team a thrilling start to the season.
